Hey this is Kirby Hasseman with the Monday Minute.
This may sound counter-intuitive, but there are times when you need to be selfish. Yes…you NEED to be selfish. This is not a call to forever be on the lookout for number one, or to step on others to get what you want. But if you are chasing a real stretch goal, it will take more of you than you have previously given. When you choose to all in with one thing…you will likely have to say “no” to other things…at least for a time.
Often when we hear this we bristle. We don’t want to be considered selfish. It’s an ugly term. Most people want to be giving and kind, right? Sure…we do. But even inside of our efforts to be giving…you can’t give to everything. You have to choose. So when you have set a big goal, there are times you are going to need to be selfish with your time.
If you want to run a marathon…you will need to be selfish with your training…or you won’t be ready. If you want to start a business…you will need to take time from your family or it will never get off the ground. In these cases, have to be at least a little selfish to succeed.
But sometimes it’s important to be selfish. Building yourself up and giving yourself purpose can make you stronger and more confident and more happy…when someone else needs to be selfish. You will be strong enough to take a backseat…and help them and be selfish too.
Thanks for watching the Monday Minute.
