Is AI Just A Trend?

Embracing Artificial Intelligence

7/20/2023 | Designer Patch

No matter where we look in the world of technology, AI is popping up more and more. And if you think this is a passing trend, I urge you to think again.

AI isn't new, in fact, the idea has been around since the 1300s. Fast forward to the 1990s and we have ‘Deep Blue’, the computer that beat the world champion chess player, and the early-2000s introduced us to a long list of smart home devices (Alexa, Google Home, Siri, etc). More recently it has been the focus of most anything technology related:

     *
 Hootsuite = OwlyWriter AI
     * HubSpot = Content Assistant and ChatSpot tools
     * apple = ML (machine learning) features
     * Microsoft Designer incorporated AI before its release
     * Google = Bard [experiment] and Google AI
     Not forgetting to mention the fast growing Midjourney and ChatGPT.

I recently attended the Adobe Create Now mini conference in Nashville, TN to learn more about their AI feature - Firefly - and other programs / workflows that are under development or in beta. In a room full of creatives - Graphic Designers, Photographers, Videographers - we were all giddy seeing what tools we’ll be able to add to our arsenals to elevate our crafts.

As I mentioned in my previous article, Can Adobe’s AI Make Virtuals Easier?, these tools are meant to assist users by “accelerating ideation, exploration, and production”. By removing some of the mundane and less creative projects / processes from our plates, we gain that time back to focus on more strategic aspects of our work.

“Machine learning is going to change every single aspect of technology, but no machine will be able to mimic the creative ability of the human mind.” - Shantanu Narayen, CEO, Adobe

To make sure you don’t fall behind and are left playing catch up, I suggest utilizing whatever AI will help your type of work. Write a lot of proposals? Try ChatGPT to help hone in on keywords based on your client’s industry. On the run and don’t have time to load up Photoshop? Try the online version of Adobe Express.

If you don’t get it at first, that’s okay. We’re all still learning.
